This Newly Discovered Jurassic Sea Monster Was Related to Ocean Super-Predators

So many new species aren’t discovered straight out of the ground, but after having been under our noses for decades. Such is the case with Arminisaurus schuberti, a newly discovered ‘sea monster’ that swam the Jurassic oceans 190 million years ago. Poor Arminisaurus had a dreadful journey. The fossilised bones were originally discovered in a clay pit near Bielefeld in Germany, all the way back in the early 1980s. But before it was found, the intact and complete skeleton was broken up by mining machinery. Only 40 percent of the bones could be recovered. It spent some time languishing in …

East Tennessee’s Hidden History: The haunting of Strong Hall

After what felt like an eternity of construction, Strong Hall officially opened its doors this past summer. The building now houses the anthropology department and the earth and planetary science departments, and it contains some very high-tech labs and classrooms with movable furniture focused on interactive learning. While I will always mourn the loss of historic buildings — which UT does not have an excellent track record of preserving — I do appreciate the effort that went into preserving and utilizing parts of the original building. The historic doorways and arches; the headstones emblazoned with the names of the first …

Kids These Days: It’s Time to Stereotype Generation Z

Millennials are, like, so 2000-and-late. Marketers now hope to sell stuff to kids born after 1995—so-called Generation Z. And this latest demographic designation is just as removed and reductive as any other. This is how marketing firm FutureCast puts it: “They view their identity as a curated composition.” (So … selfies are a thing!) “All it takes to change their outward identity is a simple swipe and an upload to Instagram.” (Swipe to upload?!) But fine, we’ll play along. After rigorous review of marketing reports and press coverage, here’s a portrait of your new sales target: the screen-swapping, painstakingly curated, …

3 People Have Died After Falling Into a Volcanic Crater in Italy

Three people – an 11-year-old boy and his parents – died after they fell into boiling mud in a volcanic crater in Pozzuoli, an Italian city not far from Naples. The family was visiting Solfatara, a shallow volcanic crater frequented by tourists, on Tuesday when the boy wandered into a restricted area and slipped into a nearly 10-foot (3-metre) deep pit, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. His father and mother fell into the hole trying to save him. Another family member, a 7-year-old boy, was nearby and did not walk beyond the fenced-off area, authorities said. He was placed …

Horror has a home in Toronto

TORONTO • Each night around 11pm at the Toronto International Film Festival, after the Oscar-bait wannabes and acclaimed documentaries have called it a day, 1,200 filmgoers line up outside Ryerson Theatre for the likes of Yakuza Apocalypse and No One Lives. These aficionados of what is known as Midnight Madness may shy away from the elaborate costumes and other geek-chic signifiers of Fantastic Fest or the various Comic-Cons. But they know their horror, gongfu and all the other low-profile genres that draw the Toronto festival’s liveliest audiences – certainly the only ones that bring inflatable beach balls to the screenings. …

When Europeans Killed Others to Kill Themselves

Cicilia Johansdatter was disturbed. A 22-year-old housemaid, she’d become pregnant shortly after getting engaged to Friedrich Christian, a guardsman. Months passed, and her child was born, but the marriage? It never happened. This was 18th-century Denmark, where being an unwed mother was a good way to find oneself spurned by society. To add to her woes, her fiancé had started acting strange — in recent weeks he’d turned cold and even stopped visiting her, signaling that the engagement was off. So on Feb. 25, 1744, with no more will to live, Cicilia found a way out: She slit her 4-month-old …

Paranormal investigator ‘makes contact’ with ghost on UK’s most haunted road

SHEFFIELD: A paranormal investigator was left shaken after he claimed to have made contact with a spirit on Britain’s most haunted road. Investigator Phil Sinclair was filming in the woods in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, to try to see if reported sightings of the spirits of children and a monk were true. The 15-minute film shows Phil use Ovilus, a device that detects EMF (Electromotive force) and turns it into language, to help communicate and record the spiritual encounter. The footage, filmed on September 2, recorded a “terrifying growl” telling him to “get out” before the spirit says he needs something. …
