A Beginners’ Guide to Hauntings: How to tell a spirit from a ghost!

There are many types of hauntings from the mundane to the downright terrifying. JANET QUINLIVAN explains how a ghost is not just a ghost by giving us a beginners guide to hauntings. Elemental Hauntings Elementals are known as spirits of the Earth. They look after the land, the skies the water and the plant life. Elementals typically don’t like city areas and do most of their work out in the open countryside and parks. Elementals don’t take kindly to damage and destruction of the land and are said to cause ‘act of god’ like disasters like floods, landslides and earthquakes. There …

This Is How Weed Actually Affects Your Sleep

If you speak to someone who has suffered from insomnia at all as an adult, chances are good that person has either tried using marijuana, or cannabis, for sleep or has thought about it. This is reflected in the many variations of cannabinoid or cannabis-based medicines available to improve sleep – like Nabilone, Dronabinol and Marinol. It’s also a common reason why many cannabis users seek medical marijuana cards. I am a sleep psychologist who has treated hundreds of patients with insomnia, and it seems to me the success of cannabis as a sleep aid is highly individual. What makes …

An AI Recreated an Old-School Video Game Just by Watching Someone Play It

There are many video game companies around these days, from established names to indie developers. Just when it seems that everyone with the ability to create video games has tried it out, researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have introduced a totally new, first of its kind developer. In a research paper published online, the Georgia Tech team showed how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to make a video game. More specifically, remake a video game: the team’s AI recreated classic two-dimensional titles, like Super Mario Bros and Mega Man, just by watching the games being played. While the Georgia Tech AI didn’t recreate full-blown versions, it did demonstrate that …

Official: NASA’s Cassini Probe Is Dead After 20 Years of Exploring Saturn

With the crackle and fade of a signal beamed from 932 million miles (1.5 billion km) away, NASA’s 20-year Cassini mission at Saturn has come to an end. The bus-size Cassini probe began its descent into Saturn while streaming unprecedented real-time measurements of the planet’s atmosphere. The probe ramped up its thrusters to keep its antenna dish pointed toward Earth to send the data. However, its connection with Earth didn’t last much longer: The thrusters weren’t designed to keep a spacecraft righted while plunging into Saturn at 78,000 mph (125,000 km/h). Cassini began to tumble, breaking its last bond with …

A Potential Vaccine Is in The Works For This Horrifying Flesh-Eating Parasite

As a flesh-eating disease starts migrating towards North America from the south, researchers have found a solution that looks promising for a vaccine. The terrifying condition is called Leishmaniasis – it’s caused by a parasite called Leishmania, which is spread around by sandfly bites. There are more than 20 species of this parasite, and the disease it causes can present in three devastating ways. Cutaneous causes ulceration of the skin and lifelong scarring. Mucocutaneous destroys the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and throat. And visceral, the most dangerous, attacks the liver and spleen – fatal if left untreated. It’s the second-deadliest parasite …

A Photographic Journey Through the Catacombs

These pictures of the catacombs are from a Spring Break trip to Paris and they hardly capture the haunting quality of the place.  The photographs were taken by Gabriel Penot.  The arch at the entrance is translated to saying:   STOP:  YOU ARE ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF THE DEAD The Catacombs of Paris have always been a source of endless fascination for me.    The catacombs are a series of labrynthian tunnels that burrow beneath the city of Paris.   The walls of these tunnels, or this ossuary, are covered in the bones of Paris’s dead.  Opened in the late 18th century, the underground cemetery …

Woman Claims Bigfoot Sighting in Washington

MALO, Wash. — A woman from Ferry County claims she saw a primate she identified as a Bigfoot. The anonymous 60-year-old woman says she was by Empire Creek road near Malo when the creature showed up. “We lived in a small house that we were building,” she said about the fall of 1993 encounter. “It was around 6 a.m. and there was just light enough to see.” The Washington resident reports that the first thing she noticed were her dogs barking at “something at the corner”. “Right where the creek ran through, then the dogs came running back to the house …

Where Horror Gets the Red Carpet Treatment

It’s a far cry from 20 years ago, when Mr. Geddes, a voluble fellow in ever-present red pants, switched from Midnight Madness fan to employee. He set out to argue on behalf of films like “The Host,” whose genre trappings he felt had automatically consigned them to second-class status. Mr. Geddes’s tenure here figures into any number of origin stories. There’s the time he fished out a screener of Eli Roth’s “Cabin Fever” from the festival’s rejection pile. And the time he ignored the response that “Saw” received at the industry-heavy Sundance Film Festival and put it in front of …

Scientists Just Added a Shocking 20 New Branches to The Tree of Life

Scientists have identified the genomes of close to 8,000 microorganisms from samples taken out in the field – and around a third of them are distinct from any life forms known to science, adding a crazy 20 new branches to our tree of microscopic life. Microorganisms fall into two categories, either bacteria or archaea, and make up the vast majority of known species on the planet. But only 1 to 2 percent of them can currently be cultured in a lab, so this study looked at real-world microbes collected from some of the most extreme places on Earth, finding a mother lode of undiscovered species. The …
