Mars simulation crew to emerge after 8 months

This is the closest you can get to living on Mars without leaving the Earth. Image Credit: NASA The crew of six NASA astronauts has been living in a dome near one of Hawaii’s largest volcanoes. Known as the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) project, the eight-month simulated mission has been designed to provide a better understanding of the mental, physical and psychological impact of living in the cramped and isolated conditions of a base on another world. Since January of this year, the crew of four men and two women have remained completely isolated from the outside …

How Bizarre Is This Year’s Wildfire Season, Really?

This story originally appeared on CityLab and is part of the Climate Desk collaboration. The West is burning, and there’s no relief in sight. More than 80 large wildfires are raging in an area covering more than 1.4 million acres, primarily in California, Montana, and Oregon, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Taken together, that’s a wildfire larger than the state of Delaware. California has declared a state of emergency as wildfires burn outside Los Angeles and threaten giant sequoias in Yosemite National Park. In Oregon, the Eagle Creek fire is tearing through the scenic Columbia River Gorge. Seattle, Boise, and Denver are …

Security News This Week: Feds Give Kaspersky Security Products the Boot

Apple finally announced the iPhone X this week, complete with a facial recognition system that Apple calls FaceID. Preliminary impressions are that FaceID will be difficult to trick, and should be secure for the average user, but researchers are eager to test its robustness. Consumer facial recognition has been around, but not yet at this scale, inviting questions about what its implications will be, particularly for privacy. Apple’s new iOS 11 mobile operating system does have more crucial privacy protections against muggers and government officials alike but researchers detailed doubts this week about the “differential privacy” techniques Apple uses that …

Space Photos of the Week: So Long, Cassini. Thanks for All the Pics

This week, all eyes are on Saturn and, more specifically, the Cassini spacecraft which circled the planet one last time before crashing into its murky surface on Friday. It left behind thousands of images, including some final shots like the photo of Saturn’s clouds near the terminator, which is the boundary between night and day. It also took the awkwardly named “goodbye-kiss” image of Titan. The moon’s gravity gave Cassini one final push around Saturn before its dramatic end. Much less tragic is the Juno spacecraft now on its eighth flyby of Jupiter. It offered a striking vision of the …

Image of the Day

Monday, July 31, 2017: NASA astronaut Jack Fischer tweeted this gorgeous image taken on the International Space Station featuring sunrise on Earth. “What do you need to start a Monday morning off right?” he wrote. “1. Floating coffee. 2. A pretty sunrise. Check and check!” Fischer has more people to share the sunrise with now; with three new arrivals Friday, there are now six crewmembers aboard the space station crew. — Sarah Lewin More interesting Articles from

How ‘Atlanta’ Expanded the Limits of Storytelling

In anticipation of Sunday’s Emmy Awards, this week WIRED staffers are looking back at some of their favorite shows from the past year. When the first season of Atlanta quietly ended last November, it did so at a turtle’s pace: low-key and unhurried. The episodes that preceded the finale embodied the same spirit—a farcical and surrealist satire bounded by Southern, downtempo cool. Along the way its creator-star Donald Glover seemed to be saying, I’ve got a destination in sight, but there’s no rush; we’ll get there when I’m ready. Atlanta, akin to the city itself, is pure sprawl—thematically sweeping if …

The Disappearing Cross

This story was sent to me by Keith Linder.  It is a chilling tale. If you would like to learn more about the paranormal investigation associated with this first hand account of hostile haunting you can read more about it at: “I will always remember the events of this day.  It was the weekend Captain America the Winter Soldier came out. April 2014. A month before this movie premier, I wanted to enjoy my cousin’s spring break, she was a school teacher – 8th and 9th grade level.  She was aware of some of the problems we having prior to arriving.  I …

An Ode to The Cabin in the Woods

A friend of mine recently posted this cool meme on my Facebook wall and people who had never seen Cabin in the Woods responded passionately about the murderous unicorn.  They clearly didn’t get the joke. I reposted the meme on the page of my favorite H.P. Lovecraft group, The H.P. Lovecraft Historic Society, thinking a group of horror fans would get the joke.  The response was primarily hatred of my use of the word “Lovecraftian” but secondarily showed that not enough people have seen The Cabin in the Woods, Joss Whedon’s loving homage to all things horror.   I am writing …

Is this a medieval women’s health manual ? Image Credit: PD A history researcher believes that he may have finally solved the mystery of the medieval manuscript. The enigmatic codex, which was first discovered in an Italian monastery by book dealer Wilfrid Voynich back in 1912, contains 240 pages of strange, indecipherable characters and images. Now though, history researcher Nicholas Gibbs believes that he may have found the …

A ball shaped UFO being checked out by a helicopter is captured on video – Paranormal Globe

This round metallic ball-shaped UFO was spotted hovering in the sky above Los Angeles, California, on August 28. Julian Lopez filmed the whole incident and posted it onto his YouTube page. He described the UFO as a “big balloon but without anything holding it” After several minutes of filming the object a helicopter comes along and starts circling the object as if it was checking it out.
